A 180 x 80cm therapy surface that rolls out on your bed, sofa or floor. Lie back, set the timer, and let red and near-infrared light cover you from shoulders to feet in one session.

What red light therapy is

Red light therapy uses low levels of red and near-infrared light on the skin. Researchers think it works by helping your cells' mitochondria produce more energy, which may support cell function and repair. It uses very little heat, doesn't burn, and — unlike a tanning bed — emits no UV.

What the research says

The evidence is still developing, and we would rather tell you that than overstate it. Reviews summarised by WebMD have found red light therapy may help with pain linked to inflammation, tendinopathy, short-term pain and stiffness in rheumatoid arthritis, acne, hair loss, and the appearance of fine lines and sun damage through collagen stimulation. It does not appear to help osteoarthritis.

Two things worth knowing before you buy. Most of these studies are small, and benefits generally require regular sessions over weeks or months. And at-home devices are typically less powerful than the equipment used in clinics, so results may take longer.

The mat

  • 180 x 80cm — shoulders to feet in a single session
  • 3,840 LEDs — 1,280 at 660nm red, 2,560 at 850nm near-infrared
  • Over 100mW/cm² measured at the surface
  • 10 to 90 minute timer on the controller
  • Rolls up for storage — flexible, not rigid
  • Rated for over 50,000 hours

What's in the box

Therapy surface, controller, protective goggles, power cord and power adaptor. Nothing else to buy.

How to use it

Unroll it on a bed, sofa or the floor. Put on the included goggles, set your time on the controller and lie back. Most people use it for 10 to 20 minutes, 3 to 5 times a week.

Safety

Always wear the included goggles — red light can cause eye damage. Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you take medication that increases skin or eye sensitivity to light, or if you have a history of skin cancer or eye disease. If you are pregnant or have a medical condition, check with your doctor first.

THE RESEARCH

Why cover the whole body

Red light works through repetition and through surface area. Treating one patch at a time means most of you never gets a session at all.

660nm Red850nm Near-infrared

On the skin — in a controlled trial of 136 volunteers (Wunsch & Matuschka, 2014), participants treated with red and near-infrared light over 30 sessions showed a measured increase in intradermal collagen density on ultrasound.

Around exercise — several randomised trials have examined red and near-infrared light before and after training, reporting reduced delayed-onset muscle soreness in the 24 to 48 hours afterwards.

On sleep — a 2023 meta-analysis of 22 studies found light therapy produced measurable improvements in sleep among people with insomnia. The researchers were clear it works best alongside behavioural changes rather than instead of them.

The chart is a general reference for the red and near-infrared spectrum — it is not a specification of this device, which emits 660nm and 850nm only. The studies cited examined red light therapy generally, not this product, and evidence across these areas varies in strength. Individual experiences vary. Lumybella devices are personal-care products for at-home use and are not medical devices.

Why you'll love it

Your whole body in one session

Shoulders to feet at once, rather than moving a small panel around and treating one patch at a time.

Rolls up and disappears

Flexible, not rigid. Unroll it on the bed or floor, then store it under the bed between sessions.

Set it and lie back

Ten to ninety minutes on the controller. No holding anything, no clock-watching.

Everything in the box

Therapy surface, controller, protective goggles, power cord and adaptor. Nothing extra to buy.

Built to keep going

LEDs rated for over 50,000 hours. At four sessions a week, that is a very long time.

Risk-free for 14 nights

Try it at home. If it isn't right for you, send it back for a full refund. Free US shipping.

THE MATHS

Full-body light therapy, at a third of the going rate

Cost per session assumes four 20-minute sessions a week for one year (208 sessions); the mat is rated for over 50,000 hours, so the figure falls every year after that. Comparison prices reflect published US figures for competing full-body mats and clinic sessions at the time of writing and are subject to change. Specifications differ between devices and are not directly equivalent. Lumybella devices are personal-care products for at-home use and are not medical devices.
